As I write my final View Through the Star as President, I find myself reflecting on what has been an incredible seven years serving on the MBCA Peachtree Board. I’ve had the privilege of serving as Secretary, Vice President, and finally President. Looking back, I’m grateful for every opportunity to help our chapter grow and, more importantly, for the friendships that have come from serving.
During those years we’ve faced our share of challenges. None was greater than the COVID pandemic. Like every organization, we suddenly found ourselves wondering how we could continue bringing members together safely.
Fortunately, we realized that driving was the perfect socially distant activity. Instead of hiding in our homes, we explored the beautiful roads of North Georgia together. Our mountain drives really took off during that time, often ending at scenic overlooks where we would open the trunks of our Mercedes and enjoy picnic lunches together. Those drives became some of my favorite club memories. They reminded us that even during difficult times, friendship always finds a way.
One thing I’ve learned is that this chapter succeeds because of an exceptional Board. Everyone is willing to jump in wherever needed. Titles matter far less than teamwork, and there is constant collaboration behind every event we enjoy.
I have had the privilege of serving alongside some remarkable people. Diana Quinn has seemingly done it all over the years, from building our website to serving as President, and now Treasurer. Brett Butler stepped into the Secretary role and has become an invaluable member of the team. Reijo Haarla has earned national recognition for his outstanding work as Membership Chair. Dietmar Schmid somehow keeps discovering the most scenic and enjoyable roads in North Georgia for our mountain drives. Gary Edwards continues to lead our performance driving and educational programs with his usual enthusiasm and expertise. Ernie Smallman has long been the mastermind behind our annual banquet, while Steve Chapman, known affectionately as “El Presidente,” continues to share the wisdom that comes from leading this chapter multiple times. Sam Kamber continues to improve our Concours program through innovation and technology. Our newest Board members, Mike Leigh and Allen Smith, have already brought fresh ideas, business experience, and new energy to the Board. They are joined by many other past Board members and volunteers who generously give their time and talents to make this club successful. I’ve been fortunate to serve alongside every one of them, and I’m proud to call them my friends.
As I pass the gavel to Marisa Hegyesi, I couldn’t be more excited about the future of our chapter. Many of you recently enjoyed learning more about Marisa in Stars in Georgia, so I’ll simply say this: she is exactly the kind of leader our club needs.
What many members may not know is that Marisa recently broke her leg while attending our Track Day in Alabama. Before the rumors begin, no, it didn’t happen in her Mercedes or even on the track! It was simply an unfortunate accident away from the driving activities. Even while confined to bed rest, she hasn’t slowed down. She has continued planning events, recruiting members, and finding ways to make our chapter even better. That determination, combined with her enthusiasm, energy, and genuine love for this club, will serve the Peachtree Chapter extremely well.
When I attended one of my first Peachtree events more than ten years ago, a Board member told me that the greatest benefit of joining the club wouldn’t be the cars. It would be the friendships. At the time, I thought that sounded nice. Today, I know it was absolutely true.
We all join because we appreciate Mercedes-Benz automobiles. We enjoy the driving events, technical sessions, concours, social gatherings, and all the other activities our chapter offers. But somewhere along the way, something even better happens. Acquaintances become friends. Friends become people you look forward to seeing every month. Before you know it, the club becomes a community.
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of serving as your President. Thank you for your encouragement, your friendship, and the countless memories Michele and I will always cherish. This club has enriched my life far more than I ever expected, and I will always be grateful for the experiences we’ve shared together.
Although I’m handing over the keys to the President’s office, I’m certainly not going anywhere. I look forward to continuing to attend events, seeing old friends, welcoming new members, and watching the Peachtree Chapter continue to thrive under Marisa’s leadership.
Thank you for the ride. It’s been an unforgettable one.
